Take It Personally

Becoming rested is all about you.

Beyond supporting our nervous system, we are also deeply nourished by non-physical forms of sustenance. Namely connection, purpose and meaning (which we are also actually biologically hardwired for.) A consideration and invitation for you to dive deeper with me on this one: maybe rest doesn’t have anything to do with doing vs not doing.

Maybe rest is its own modality in our holistic health and wellbeing. Maybe rest is conscious choice and awareness. It can be an uncommon decision in not asking anything more (on any level, from any parts) of ourselves. Switch on the Do Not Disturb mode- even for a minute to see what it’s like- for the next goal/plan/opportunity/problem/task. What’s it like to rest right in this moment?

We open the doorway to self-compassion, forgiveness and acceptance. It can be gently giving yourself permission to worry less and experience more joy. I had 3 different conversations these past few days where I listened to people reflect on realizing they had been waiting for permission to relax; to release; to reset. Spoiler alert: it transformed their experience. Challenges were unveiled as opportunities and uncertainty became synonymous with possibility.

“Unfortunately, we often simply tune out the longings we feel, rather than confront and act on them. Perhaps we do not really forget our calls but we fear what they might demand of us in pursuing them.”

— Caroline Myss

Anyone else been experiencing this? * raises hand * The paradox of rest is that it can also actually be a (special) form of... work. As in it can take time, energy and attention to invest in your capacity for more time, energy and attention. The resistance is natural but when we rest in the ways that we need, we end up getting paid in multiple currencies.

During physical distancing, we may be in a home while not feeling at home. We’re seeing the significance of tuning in to take care of ourselves, and tuning out the noise of media and information (no matter how well-intended). Among the many changes we are acknowledging, what used to be restful for us may no longer be restful now. And we need it more than ever. Rest can be a vehicle for healing, change and peace, if you choose. After all,

  • you hold the experience, honesty and insight into how/what/why you feel at any given moment

  • you have lived this far through your life's adversity, stress, pain, grief and what once felt impossible

  • you are the only You on this planet (the universe really gets the concept of quality over quantity)

You’re the best one for the job since it all starts within you. Please, do take rest personally.

The Rested Revolution is here to support you in connecting to rest on all levels and bodies: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Through education, exploration and experiences, we’re here to share with you the many different ways you can choose rest.
